Weakening dollar forces petrol prices up another 6c

Petrol prices in some places have climbed 36c since January 14, edging back towards the record highs of 2008.

BP led a price rise in petrol and diesel at the pump this afternoon and Caltex and Mobil have followed suit.

Petrol has gone up 6 cents a litre with 91 selling for 168.9 cents a litre and diesel for 106.9 cents a litre.

BP spokeswoman Diana Stretch said the rise was due to a weakening New Zealand dollar and an increase in the refined price of fuels.

"Where we had seen a relatively stable diesel price, we're now seeing it come up again," Ms Stretch said.

Caltex spokeswoman said the rise was also due to the exchange rate and the rise in international prices.

Mobil spokesman Alan Bailey also said the increasing international price and the falling dollar was putting pressure on margins.

He said the story is the same in Australia but due to a slightly stronger dollar and a different tax regime the prices are slightly different.

Gull has not increased its prices today. Retail business manager Graham Stirk said his company would not be moving today but would review their prices tomorrow.

The price of petrol at some petrol stations has now gone up 36 cents a litre since January 14.

Shell have so far not returned phone calls.
