People have been urged to take care around beaches and waterways by Water Safety New Zealand, which is trying to keep the drowning toll down over the holiday period.
Eight people drowned in last summer's holiday period - between 4pm on Christmas Eve and 6am on January 5 - while the year before 13 people died in the water.
