WATCH: New Years' resolution leads to Splore performance for young Kiwi duo

New Years' resolutions are notorious for ending in disappointment, but for one Kiwi backpacker they've paved the path to a festival performance.

Freddy Carr decided she'd teach herself hooping on New Year's eve two years ago - a form of dancing which uses a hula hoop to weave shapes with as you move.

Now, the 23-year-old is performing at this weekend's Splore music festival with her friend, flatmate and dancing partner Jadyn Burt, 21.

After travelling South America for several months with two hoops strapped to her back, Carr recently returned to New Zealand and met Burt, a contemporary dance graduate.

They quickly realised they shared a love of movement and decided to start a project together.

The pair filmed a video of their dance duo, Fish and Fox, which caught the eye of Splore's festival runners late last year.

"It's kind of like our CV at the moment," Carr said of the video.

The pair sent the video to a few different festivals, and Splore got back to them right away.

"They were really positive."

Carr and Burt will lead a dance workshop as well as performing with a music artist on stage in front of a crowd of thousands in full body paint.

"With our performance I just want to encourage people to get up and move," Burt said.

"I find dance to be so grounding and contemporary dance is something anyone can do.

"It's about the movement and the freedom."

Fish and Fox was a name dreamed up by Burt before she had a project, and as soon as she met Carr she knew she'd found someone to start one with.

"We think everyone's a little bit fishy and everyone's a little bit foxy," Carr said.

"The fish is super flow and the fox has a bit of, attack, some kind of assertion."

Neither of them was definitely the fish or the fox in their duo, Burt said.

"I think we flip between the two."

Thousands are expected at this weekend's Splore festival, which started yesterday at the Tapapakanga Park, Orere. Entertainment includes music, performance, visual art, workshops and forums.
