Mr Allingham said a temporary access road "might take a little while" as it was likely resource consent and discussions with landowners would have to take place first.
Repairing the ford would be funded by NZTA and could cost between $150,000 to $200,000, he said.
David Hancock, general manager Destination Wairarapa, said traditionally there was an influx of visitors to Wairarapa over the Easter break and they could still enjoy the Cape Palliser sights like the lighthouse.
"You can park your car and it's a lovely walk along the coast, past the seals and the rock formations.
"It's very easy to get to."
Mr Hancock said Lake Ferry and Ngawi, with its tractors, were also great attractions.
"It's always spectacular, it's great fun for the kids."
He said accommodation was filling up.
"It's a great time of year where people bring friends and family."
