WEATHER DAMAGED: The last ford on the road to Cape Palliser has been completely washed out and could take some time to repair.
Constant rain has washed out part of the road to Cape Palliser Lighthouse, a popular tourist destination.
After a deluge of rain, some roads in South Wairarapa had to be closed but are now all open, except for the last two kilometres of Cape Palliser Rd before the lighthouse.
However,Easter holiday makers can venture to the lighthouse by foot and see the seal colony and scenery along the way, said Mark Allingham, group manager infrastructure services for South Wairarapa District Council.
"With the recent weather we have had several incidents of damage on the road with the last ford about 2km from the end washed out fully."
The Mangatoetoe Bridge was also structurally damaged.
Mr Allingham said a temporary access road "might take a little while" as it was likely resource consent and discussions with landowners would have to take place first.
Repairing the ford would be funded by NZTA and could cost between $150,000 to $200,000, he said.
David Hancock, general manager Destination Wairarapa, said traditionally there was an influx of visitors to Wairarapa over the Easter break and they could still enjoy the Cape Palliser sights like the lighthouse.
