Warning of flash floods, slips

Flash floods and slips could hit the North Island this afternoon, MetService warns.

It has issued a severe thunderstorm watch notice predicting hailstones and localised downpours of 20-30mm an hour in the Waikato, Taumarunui and Waitomo.

The storm could cause flash flooding in low-lying areas and may lead to slips, MetService said.

It warned driving conditions could be hazardous, with surface flooding and poor visibility possible.

The warning is valid until 9pm tonight.
