Warmer temperatures but drivers still warned of ice

Police are expecting a quieter morning in Canterbury with less ice to make the roads treacherous.

Southern Police spokesman Murray Hurst said there had been no call-outs for traffic incidents so far this morning.

He said drivers still needed to take care on the roads - especially further south.

"Christchurch isn't too bad...I would imagine down south around Dunedin Central Otago it'll still be icy."

Black ice caused one fatal crash in Canterbury on Tuesday, with more than 25 crashes occurring in the region throughout the morning.

Wednesday was also dicey with a handful of call-outs on the roads due to morning ice.

The NZTA has issued warnings for ice on state highways throughout the south, stating drivers need to take caution in the extreme conditions.

Warnings - Ice:
•State Highway 94 from Mossburn to Te Anau
•State Highway 80 - Mount Cook Highway
•State Highway 8 from Twizel to Fairlie
•State Highway 79 from Geraldine to Fairlie

Warnings - snow:
State Highway 94 from Te Anau to Milford Sound

Warnings - snow and ice:
•State Highway 8 from Lindis Pass, Tarras to Omarama
