Wanaka was rocked by a magnitude 4.3 quake this afternoon.

The tremor struck at 4.12pm, was 15km deep and was centred 50km north-west of the South Island resort town.

St John said there were no reports of injuries following this afternoon's earthquake near Wanaka.

"St John advises people to always make sure they have their emergency kits and other items ready in case of any emergency, and to also keep in contact with their friends and family, and especially any neighbours who may be elderly or alone."

Earlier today a 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck near Te Anau in Southland.

Geonet said the quake, which struck about 9.22am, was centred 30km north of the town, 64km deep.

Yesterday, four tremors struck close to the Hawkes Bay town of Porangahau at a depth of 20 kilometres or less.

The most powerful was a moderate strength magnitude 4 earthquake which struck just after 6am.

A 3.1 magnitude quake struck at 6.38am, a 2.5 magnitude quake at 7.32am and a 3 magnitude quake at 8.02am.
