“An area of Roche Street remains closed while a scene examination is completed,” said a spokesperson just after 1pm.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said two crews attended.
She said a person was “trapped under a vehicle” and firefighters “extricated” them and assisted St John paramedics at the scene.
It is unclear whether the incident happened on the road or on a private property.
A Hato Hone St John spokesperson confirmed two ambulances, one operations manager and one helicopter responded to the scene.
An hour before the fatal incident, a person was killed in a crash near Te Poi.
The two-vehicle crash happened on State Highway 24/Tauranga Rd and was reported to emergency services at 9.45am.
Police confirmed in a statement this afternoon that one person died at the scene.
