Phil Keinzley was a happier man after his team's 3-0 win over fellow Central League football side Wellington United at Howard Booth Park in Carterton on Saturday.
Keinzley went into the game wanting a much improved effort from Wairarapa United than they had shown in a 3-2 loss tothe same Wellington United unit earlier in the month and the message obviously sunk home.
"We were better, a lot better," Keinzley said after Saturday's game. "The intensity was up and we were a lot more cohesive, it was pretty much what we were after."
Wairarapa United scored two of their goals during an opening 20 minutes which saw them camp deep in opposition territory for long periods. the first of them to recent acquisition, Spaniard George Jermy, and the second to Nathan Cooksley. And they added a third in the second spell through Aaron Spierling.
It was another of their new recruits in Jorge de la Torre who was the standout player for Wairarapa United. The central midfielder was a commanding presence on attack and defence. Fullback Waisake Sabatu also had a fine game, positioning himself cleverly and intercepting a number of breaking balls, while Jermy and Seule Soromon often opened up the Wellington United defence with their pace and inventiveness up front.
Wairarapa United's opening Central League fixture is against Tawa at Howard Booth Park on Sunday, April 7.
