Earlier on Saturday police arrested a 27-year-old man who was in possession of cannabis through a routine traffic stop in Colombo Rd, Masterton.
"Officers noticed there was some drug paraphernalia in a car in a search and surveillance operation," Mr Matheson said.
"This led to the recovery of a smallest quantity of commercially packaged cannabis.
"As a result a 27-year-old man will be facing a charge of possession of cannabis for supply."
The man will appear on these charges at Masterton District Court on Thursday.
In the early hours of Sunday morning police were called to break up a fight between two groups in the vicinity of McDonalds and Burger King on Chapel St.
A person was arrested, and another was treated for injuries.
"This was a clash between two groups which involved an exchange of punches and blows," Mr Matheson said.
"Police were on scene very quickly and the group was dispersed away.
"One person was arrested for disorder and released on a pre-charge warning- he was released pretty quickly."
Mr Matheson said the brawl was not gang-related, but rather was an alcohol-fuelled "significant breach of the peace".
"The police staff that responded intervened and pretty much separated the parties who agreed to disagree with one another."
