Wairarapa edges to win

Wairarapa scored a hard-fought 13-11 win over Manawatu in a senior representative tennis match played at the Masterton Tennis Centre last Sunday.
A vital factor in the Wairarapa victory was the singles victory secured by Jan Wyeth over Amy Van Vellemond. Wyeth got home 6-3, 7-5 and was the only Wairarapa woman to win in that section of the game..
But the lack of success there was more than balanced by the effort of the Wairarapa men who won all six of their singles encounters. In fact, Marcus Daniell, Matt Spooner, Geoff McKay, Mike Jackson, Marco de Groot and Baden Stevenson each won in straight sets.
Wairarapa also made a clean sweep of the men's doubles but failed to score a win in the women's doubles and the combines evened out at three matches apiece. Spooner, McKay and de Groot went through the fixture without defeat.
The end result showed how unfortunate Wairarapa were to miss out on a challenge for the symbol of supremacy of Central Districts tennis, the Christie Cup, this season.Manawatu held the trophy until last month when they were surprisingly beaten by Hawke's Bay.
