Health authorities in Hamilton yesterday lifted health warnings on Waikato River water.
Warning signs along the river were removed after tests showed levels of an algal bloom that has plagued the river had dropped to below a certain level, said Waikato medical officer of health Felicity Dumble.
Ten days ago the river
was closed to drinking and recreational use after complaints of allergic reactions. People were warned that contact with toxic water could cause problems with the liver and nervous system.
On Friday, Hamilton City Council unanimously backed fast-tracking a $4.5 million upgrade of the city's water treatment plant.
The decision means the upgraded facility could be working by 2006 rather than 2008.
