Waikato algae levels recede

Levels of the potentially blue-green algae - which have been plaguing Waikato waterways for months - are finally starting to recede. Health officials declared the Waikato River and several surrounding lakes unsafe for human contact when blooms reached potentially dangerous levels.

Algae started to recede when the weather changed recently and the health warning has been lifted from the Waikato River. But people are still advised to avoid direct contact with the water of Lakes Waahi, Whangape, Hakanoa, Kainui and Ngaroto.
