Waihi teen struck by car

A Waihi teenager is in a critical condition after being struck by a car while waiting for his school bus.

The 13-year-old was hit on the side of the road in the Athenree Gorge on State Highway 2 just after 8am.

Police say the boy is in Tauranga Hospital with serious injuries.

The serious crash unit is still at the scene.

A stretch of State Highway 2, from Athenree through to Beach Rd, is expected to be closed for some time.
