Wairarapa College A set a new record for the Wairarapa secondary schoolboys' basketball competition when they scored 171 points against defending champions Chanel College in their semifinal clash at the War Memorial Stadium in Masterton.
And, what's more, a member of their winning side, Michael McDermott, also set an individualrecord when he scored 76 points, beating the mark set by Chanel's Matthew Adam the previous year.
Wairarapa College A won the semi 171-32 and, apart from McDermott, the top scorers were Gio Ortega with 28 and Kawana Gaunt with 18.
Standout player for Chanel was Anthony Dennes, who scored 14.
Up against Wairarapa College A in the grand final will be Kuranui College, who defeated Wairarapa College B 65-46 in the other semifinal. Kuranui's star player Finn Shepherd boosted the team's score by 20 points.
In the division-two semifinals, Wairarapa College Brothers defeated Chanel College Blues 38-33 and Wairarapa College Shedders beat Wairarapa College Natives 29-21 in a match which went to extra time.
Next week's finals at the War Memorial Stadium start with the division two fixture at 5.30pm and the division one match at 7pm.
