Wanted: Eagle-eyed crime fighters to keep a careful watch over the capital.

Wellington police and the city council are looking for about 20 volunteers to monitor the CCTV cameras installed around the central city to prevent crime.

They were hoping for naturally inquisitive, cool and calm helpers to monitor 13 cameras from an office in the central Police Station in Victoria Street.

Police hoped the initiative would curb crime or disorderly behaviour including burglary, assault and vandalism.

Wellington police community services manager Matt Boyce said they were looking for people who could give up some of their spare time to make the central city a "safer place to live, work and play".

Potential volunteers would receive an information pack which included introductory information and all relevant police check forms and code of conduct guides.

Training would be provided by police and a volunteer co-ordinator, Mr Boyce said.

• Honesty and integrity, and an ability to maintain confidentiality;
• Good command of English language - both verbal and written;
• Quick responses to clearly describe the situation they are seeing; and
• An ability to do at least two shifts every month - mainly at night but they can be arranged to suit the volunteer.
