Vital route connecting Queenstown, Wānaka reopens after crash injures five

A vital route connecting Queenstown and Wānaka has reopened after a serious crash that injured five people.

Police are continuing to investigate the crash that is expected to cause delays to traffic using the Cardrona Valley Rd today, with the busy route being forced down to one lane for enquiries to take place.

The crash was on Cardrona Valley Rd, the main route between Queenstown and Wānaka.

Emergency services received reports of the multiple-vehicle crash on the road about 4pm yesterday.

Hato Hone St John responded with multiple units, including three helicopters, and assessed five patients at the scene.

One person in a critical condition was flown to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter.

Another in a serious condition was flown to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter.

A person in a serious condition and another in a moderate condition were taken by ambulance to Dunstan Hospital.

Police attended the crash and set up diversions around the crash scene.

Motorists were earlier advised to delay or avoid travel through the area if possible.
