Video of bomb scare robber released

A man suspected of planting a hoax bomb while robbing a bank in south Auckland was caught on CCTV taking off his disguise.

The robber left with a small amount of money, after entering the BNZ bank on Ronwood Avenue in Manukau on January 24, claiming to have an explosive device.

It was later found to be an elaborate hoax bomb.

Footage of the man, who hailed a taxi to a McDonald's in Otara after the robbery and was caught on the vehicle's CCTV camera, was released today by police.

He can be seen taking off a wig, "clearly" showing his real hair and identity, say police.

"We expect that this video footage will help identify the suspect," said Detective Sergeant Dave Honiss of Counties Manukau central CIB.

"The clip clearly shows his mannerisms, which are often more of a giveaway for identity than a still photo.

"He also puts a hat on, which somebody may recognise."

The video clip is likely to lead to an arrest, Mr Honiss said.

"Police advise anyone with information on the suspect to come forward," he added.

"Aggravated robbery is a serious offence and we are looking to speak to this individual as soon as possible."
