Van window 'shot' at in Taranaki

Reports of shots fired at a van in New Plymouth may have been nothing more than a stone from a sling shot, say police.

Police initially thought a high calibre rifle or firearm was involved when the rear window of a van was smashed near Port Taranaki in New Plymouth this afternoon.

"After investigation it is clear that it was a sling shot or possibly someone throwing stones, definitely not a high calibre firearm," a police spokesman told NZPA.

Police were looking in to the incident but reports of a cordon in place were incorrect, he said.
