A roofer who rolled his ute seven times when he took a corner too fast managed to escape without injury but not a conviction.
In Masterton District Court on Monday, Aaron James Gordon, 29, pleaded guilty to driving in a dangerous manner on Western Lake Rd on December 4 lastyear.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Jodie Lawrence said Gordon had a passenger with him, a colleague, when he lost control on the narrow road.
They had stopped for a cigarette and set off to return to their Masterton work depot, approaching a one-lane bridge at more than 100km/h.
"He was unable to negotiate the corner, fishtailing, rolling seven times before coming to rest."
The tyres were squealing as they took the corner and the passenger told police he estimated Gordon was driving about 110km/h. No other cars were involved in the crash and the passenger received superficial injuries.
Judge Barbara Morris said Gordon could have been facing a very different charge. "Western Lake Rd is a road that has claimed lives in the past."
She convicted and fined Gordon $800 and $130 in court costs. He was also disqualified from driving for six months.
