Upper Hutt industrial fire: One person burned in car yard blaze

One person has been burned during a large building fire that has engulfed an Upper Hutt car yard.

Emergency services said they were responding to a building fire in an Upper Hutt industrial area on Dante Rd.

A video of the blaze shows thick black smoke filling the air as bright orange flames come from the building.

It is understood that piles of tyres went up in flames.

One person on social media reported hearing “quite a few explosions”.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said they were called to the fire just after 4pm.

The fire in the building was well involved on arrival.

It responded with six fire engines and four specialist vehicles.

Fire and Emergency NZ said the blaze was in “the vicinity of a commercial premise” and the large amount of smoke is probably because the fire has “spread to a couple of tyre piles”.

The spokesperson said one person suffered burns at the scene.

Fire and Emergency NZ said the fire has since been extinguished.

A specialist fire investigator was called to the scene.
