Unlucky break for trapped seagull

Emergency services were called to downtown Auckland this morning after a seagull became trapped inside a lamp post.

Two fire trucks were sent to the scene at the intersection of Albert and Quay St about 10.50am.

A fire communications spokesperson said it was not unusual for emergency workers to come to the aid of animals.

"As a member of the public said, the bird was clearly distressed and quite a crowd and gathered so we thought, well we will see if we can go and help.

The bird was freed minutes later.

Earlier today, the fire service was called to a home in St Heliers after a cat became stuck behind a water tank.

They were working to free the cat.
