Wairarapa United's 4-2 defeat of Wellington United on Saturday did nothing to boost their prospects of winning their first Central League title.
While the win enabled them to hold down third place on the points table with 20 points (from 11 games) the two sides ahead of them, MiramarRangers and Wellington Olympic, tasted success as well. Miramar Rangers thrashed Upper Hutt City 6-2 to take their points tally to 30 from 12 games while Olympic were given a fright by cellar-dwellers Tawa, winning 4-3 to take their points from 11 games to 28.
The full competition table is: Miramar Rangers 30, Wellington Olympic 28, Wairarapa United 20, Western Suburbs 20, Napier City Rovers 16, Lower Hutt City 14, Upper Hutt City 14, Petone 13, Wellington United 4 and Tawa 1.
Douglas Villa went on a goal-scoring spree in their Capital Football second division fixture with Tawa Bulldogs in Masterton on Saturday, winning by 9-0 and keeping themselves well in contention for some silverware at the end of the season.
They are third-equal on the points table with 24, behind Western Suburbs (28) and Island Bay United (27) and equal with Upper Hutt City. Then come Naenae 23, Stop Out 15, Wellington Olympic 12, Lower Hutt City 10, Tawa Bulldogs 7 and Wellington United 6.
There were mixed results over the weekend for the three Wairarapa teams contesting Capital's third division series. Wairarapa United seconds beat Marist 2-1, Gardner Electrical Masterton drew 1-1 with Victoria University and White Swan Greytown lost 6-2 to Petone Armanis. Victoria University top the points table with 30, one ahead of Wairarapa United seconds on 29 but the latter have the luxury of a game in hand. Petone Armanis have 28, Waterside-Karori Cougars 26, Gardner Electrical Masterton 13, Petone 13, White Swan Greytown 12, Marist 11, Wainuiomata 9 and NW Inglorious White Socks 8.
