United retain Capital premier top spot

WAIRARAPA United retained their place at the top of the Capital premier division women's football points table after their 5-0 win over Stop Out on Sunday but coach Phil Keinzley was not enthused by their overall performance.

"It was average, very average," Keinzley said. "There was not a lot of structure, we really struggled in that respect."

The best part of the game for Wairarapa United was, in fact, the first six minutes when they netted two goals and looked set to run up a miniature cricket score but the longer the game progressed the more they wasted possession through a mix of poor option taking and players looking to do too much on their own.

"We didn't function as a team, there was the odd time when we strung a few passes together but generally we were too loose," Keinzley said, adding that the only real plus was that the game came one week before their national Knockout Cup competition match with Napier Marist.

"Sometimes it helps to get a decent wake-up call before going into a big game, and we certainly got that."

Three of the Wairarapa United goals were scored by Stephanie Andrews-Paul , who impressed with her work rate up front in the second spell, and the two other goal scorers, Meisha Boone and Kate McGovern, also had solid games.

Douglas Villa remain at the bottom of the Capital second division men's competition after their narrow 4-3 defeat by Lower Hutt City on Saturday.

The Wairarapa United seconds men's team went down 4-1 to North Wellington reserves in their latest Capital third division match. North Wellington reserves and Brooklyn Northern United reserves lead the points table with 13, followed by Wellington Olympic 9, Victoria University thirds 9, Upper Hutt City 9, Wairarapa United seconds 7, Victoria University Stallions 6, Petone 3, Marist reserves 1.
