Undie 500 student rally called off

Canterbury students have cancelled their annual Undie 500 rally after Dunedin officials made it clear they were not welcome.

Organisers from Canterbury University's Engineering Society said proposals aimed at avoiding a repeat of last year's disorderly behaviour had been rejected by Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin and Otago University.

But it seems an unofficial event may still take place, as an underground "Undy500" group on the social networking site Facebook is pledging to organise a back-up event.
