Two student bars close down in Dunedin

Two of Dunedin's biggest student bars have closed their doors for good.

It was announced on the Capone's and Boogie Nites Facebook pages that the bars were closed yesterday morning.

Capone's, in Frederick St, and Boogie Nights, in George St, have become two of Dunedin's most frequented student watering holes in recent years.

A message on the bars' respective social media sites said ''we are very sorry'' to announce the bars' closure.

''Many thanks to all the staff, customers and everyone that has been involved.''

Attempts to contact the bars' owner, Rob Dale, were unsuccessful yesterday.

He has publicly criticised the Dunedin City Council's draft local alcohol policy, which included earlier closing times for bars and a controversial 1am one-way door measure.

Mr Dale also owns Urban Factory, but no word on its future was available yesterday.

Last September, Mr Dale said he would close all three bars if the DCC's policy was passed.

A decision has yet to be made on the local alcohol policy.
