Police and the Mt Maunganui Surf Lifesaving Club responded to reports of a woman in distress off the beach on Wednesday.
A local resident saw the 63-year-old woman struggling and went in to help
her, but got into difficulties himself.
A boat from the surf club arrived a short time later and rescued both.
