Two people are in hospital after a two-car crash in Canterbury this morning that has blocked off a busy intersection.

Firefighters cut one person out of a wrecked car on Weedons Rd and Ellesmere Junction Rd.

St John Ambulance communications advisor Gerard Campbell said they took one person with moderate injuries and another with serious injuries to Christchurch Hospital.

The police serious crash unit has been advised.
