Two people are feared missing overnight off a Coromandel beach on a double kayak.

Waikato police and Whitianga Coastguard were alerted to the possibility of two kayakers missing off Hahei Beach near Goat Island.

Police were told a man and a woman had left Hahei Beach on a tandem, sit-on kayak, at about 6pm, and were last seen offshore around sunset. Flashing lights were later seen offshore in the direction of Goat Island.

The kayakers were thought to have only one paddle between them.

A search of the area by two coastguard crews, Westpac Rescue helicopter, and police failed to find anyone needing help and no-one has yet been reported overdue.

Police wanted to speak with anyone who was kayaking in the Hahei Beach area yesterday evening or who saw the couple around that time.

Police have suspended the search, pending further information.
