Two in court on street racing charges after smash that killed four

Two 20-year-old men have appeared in court charged with street racing causing death after four people were killed in a horror smash in June.

Dylan Cossey and Stephen John Jones, of Hamilton, briefly appeared in the Hamilton District Court this morning facing a total of 11 charges between them over the crash that killed three men and one woman and injured Matthew Scheepers.

The crash happened when a northbound Nissan Skyline collided with a southbound van on Ohaupo Rd, at the intersection of Ingram Rd outside Hamilton Airport, about 10pm on June 24.

Hamilton woman Hannah Lei Strickett-Craze, 24, the mother of a son, Levi, 4, and 20-year-old Te Awamutu man Paul De Silva - the father of a 2-year-old son, Cosmo - died, along with Lance Robinson, 28, of Te Awamutu, and Jason McCormick Ross, 19, of Stratford.

Jones and Cossey, who are labourers, were remanded on bail without plea and will reappear in court next month.

Jones faces five charges of encouraging unnecessary speed leading to the injuries to Matthew Scheepers and the deaths of Ross, Robinson, De Silva and Strickett-Craze. The charges have a maximum jail term of 10 years' prison or a $20,000 fine:

Cossey has been charged with failing to stop with operating a motor vehicle on a road causing deaths and injury.

The charges also have a maximum jail term of 10 years' prison or a $20,000 fine.

Jones and Cossey's bail conditions include not contacting victims or witnesses' families.
