Two dead in firearms incident at Castlepoint, Wairarapa

Two people are dead after a "suspicious" shooting near Castlepoint in Wairarapa.

The bodies of a man and a woman were found at a rural home on Masterton-Castlepoint Rd.

The armed offenders squad were deployed to the area shortly after 5am in response to a firearms incident.

The deceased people lived at the property, which they had moved into about a year ago.

"The two people involved were known to each other and police do not believe there is any further risk to the community," police said.

"No one else is being sought in relation to this incident."

Police said they were likely to be at the scene for several days while they investigated "exactly what occurred this morning".

A Wellington Free Ambulance spokeswoman said they were called to a private address at 5.10am after a 111 call. Two ambulances were sent to the property.
