LATINO WAIATA: Makoura College old boy Matiu Te Huki fuses Maori and Brazilian music alongside ex-pat Brazilian Alda Rezende. PHOTO/FILE
A fusion of Maori and Brazilian music will tonight fuel a sonic collaboration for Makoura College old boy Matiu Te Huki and South American ex-pat Alda Rezende.
The pair will headline the Tutakitaki show at King Street Live in Masterton tonight alongside Brazilians Caito Marcondes and Kristoff Silva, bringing togetherthe music of both cultures.
Te Huki, 42, of Ngati Kahungunu and Ngati Rangitane iwi, boasts the stage name of 'The Hook' and has played alongside star Kiwi acts including Fat Freddy's Drop, Rhombus, Pitch Black, Tiki Taane and Anika Moa.
He first looked to a career in music and Maori performance while a student at Makoura College, winning confidence as a kapa haka performer, and today aims to enlighten and inspire his audiences.
"I have a desire to make a difference and music is such a powerful way to make a difference," Te Huki said.
Tutakitaki featured at the Cuba Dupa festival in Wellington over last weekend and the show also had been performed at the Brazilian Embassy and the Maori Market in Wellington last year.
Rezende, 47, is from the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais and has been a professional musician and performer for the past two decades.
Entry costs $20 to the Tutakitaki show at King Street Live tonight from 7pm.
