Tsunami warning for coastal New Zealand cancelled after magnitude 7.9 earthquake in Papua New Guinea

A tsunami warning issued for all New Zealand coastal areas has now been cancelled.

The official tsunami cancellation message related to the mag 8 eq in PNG has now been issued. We hope the rest of your night is peaceful.

The warning was issued after a magnitude 7.9 earthquake in Papua New Guinea.

The warning was issued by the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management.

In their latest tweet at 1.06am, civil defence said no evacuations were necessary.

Earlier, they warned people to stay out of the water and off the beaches.

The earthquake struck east of Taron, in Papua New Guinea earlier in the evening.
