An organisation to establish more community involvement in saving New Zealand's endangered kiwi was launched at Auckland Zoo yesterday by Prime Minister Helen Clark.
The Kiwi Recovery Trust, a partnership between the Bank of New Zealand and the Department of Conservation, will build on a previous partnership between the BNZ, DoC
and Forest and Bird.
Helen Clark said the trust would "help extend kiwi conservation work beyond the sanctuaries by working with communities, conservation groups and iwi who were determined to see kiwi thrive in their local area".
BNZ managing director Peter Thodey said: "Our partnership with the Department of Conservation since 1991 has produced great results for kiwi, and we are privileged to be a part of such ground-breaking and dedicated work."
