Person dies after fuel tanker crashes into Lower Hutt building

A person has died after a fuel tanker crashed into a car dealership in Lower Hutt this morning.

The accident happened at the BYD car dealership in Rutherford St about 5.30am.

A police spokesperson confirmed one person died.

A spokesperson for the dealership said the crash was “horrific” and his thoughts and prayers were with the driver and their family.

A Fire and Emergency shift manager said they worked to free the driver from the wreckage.

A local worker said at 9am, five police cars remained on the scene.

He could see a car being taken away on the back of a truck, damaged during the crash this morning.

Rutherford and Melling Sts will be closed for most of the morning.

Police closed Melling Bridge at 7.40am and said it was expected to remain closed for at least two hours.

A police spokesperson said enquiries were continuing.
