Trial set for Christchurch GP Dr Rakesh Chawdhry on allegations he sexually assaulted male patients

Christchurch doctor Rakesh Kumar Chawdhry, 61, will stand trial later this year on charges that he indecently assaulted male patients.

A Christchurch doctor accused of indecently assaulting male patients will stand trial this year.

Rakesh Kumar Chawdhry, 61, will stand trial in November on 16 sex charges alleged to have happened while working as a GP at the Riccarton Clinic between January 2011 and December 2015.

A new charge alleging that he indecently assaulted a man on August 1, 2013, was laid today at Christchurch District Court.

Defence counsel Paul Wicks QC said Chawdhry pleaded not guilty to all charges.

A four-week jury trial is now set to begin on November 13.

Chawdhry was arrested in June last year and was granted interim name suppression when he first appeared in court.

His suppression was lifted by a District Court judge and unsuccessfully appealed to the High Court.

He has voluntarily stopped practising while he fights the charges.
