Car maker BMW presumably saw the irony of powering the production line for its new BMW i3 and i8 electricity-driven models with electricity generated from burning coal, so has announced it is building a 10MW windfarm to power the plant.

The turbines will be built beside the existing car plant in Leipzig, Germany, which turns out about 200,000 vehicles per year. The company wants the entire production process to be based on the use of sustainable energies.

Meanwhile the Ford plant in Dagenham, UK, is also intended to be fully powered by wind by August next year. Currently there are two turbines generating electricity for the plant; the addition of a third will produce more electricity throughout the year than the plant uses.
