Transit chiefs look north

District councils in Northland hope to get more money for their problem roads after a promise by Transport Minister Annette King to bring the board of the road funding authority Transit to the region.

Whangarei Mayor Stan Semenoff says Northland struggles to get Transit funding because a national formula for roading subsidies disadvantages the region.

Whangarei, Far North and Kaipara district councils, supported by the Northland Regional Council, want Transit directors to take a special, first-hand look at the region's urgent roading problems and the minister has agreed to the visit. The Transit board is expected within two months.
