The Māpua community is mourning the loss of a local woman who died while tramping on the West Coast last week.
Police confirmed that Amy MacIver, 53, of Māpua, died in the Klondyke Valley, Reefton, on Friday.
“Our thoughts are with her family and her climbing companion,” a police statementsaid today.
Police said they were notified at about 6.30pm that a personal locator beacon had been activated near the Klondyke Rahu Saddle.
In a public online tribute, local café Java Hut said it was “with deep sorrow” it shared news of the loss of “our wonderful Amy”, describing her as passionate, enthusiastic and kind.
“Amy tragically passed away on Friday evening while tramping. Such shocking and devastating news. We are so sorry to everyone who knew, liked and loved Amy,” the post said.
Amy MacIver was deeply connected to the Māpua community.
The café said MacIver “absolutely loved being part of the Māpua community and felt she had a special place here at Java Hut that helped connect her to so many beautiful people”.
“To her husband, Adam, and family, we are so sorry for your loss,” the post said.
A memorial for MacIver will be held in the New Year.
