Train-car crash closes SH1

State Highway 1 north of Wellington was closed this morning after a serious accident, believed to involve a car and a train.

The crash happened about 10.30am at the intersection of SH1 and Station Road, Te Horo, near Waikanae, police said in a statement.

Radio New Zealand reported two people were seriously injured when a train hit a car.

SH1 has since reopened.

No further details were available.
