The world's first University Chair in archaeoastronomy, Professor Clive Ruggles, is to speak on his trailblazing discipline at the Carterton Events Centre on Sunday.
Professor Ruggles is to lead the inaugural Beatrice Hill Tinsley Lecture from 3pm on Sunday as a part of the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand2012 conference at the centre hosted by the Wairarapa-based Phoenix Astronomical Society.
The lecture on Sunday will be the first of an annual series of astronomical lectures named after the New Zealand cosmologist Beatrice Hill Tinsley, said RASNZ council member Orlon Petterson.
Each year, a prominent astronomer will be invited to give a lecture in a number of venues. The upcoming Carterton lecture, titled Ancient Astronomers - Ancient Worlds, will launch the series.
Professor Ruggles is the Emeritus Professor of Archaeoastronomy at the University of Leicester in Britain.
