Trail bikes collide

A 9-year-old Southland boy received serious head injuries after two trail bikes collided yesterday in what Wanaka police said was "an accident waiting to happen".

Sergeant Aaron Nicholson said the boy was riding a 50cc motocross bike with family members at 12.30pm on a series of tracks on private land near the Outlet Track at Tuatapere.

"He left the group and rode up a different track. He was riding up a hill and met another rider at the brow of the hill who was coming in the opposite direction."
