Police urge motorists to avoid the area as efforts are made to clear the scene so lanes can be reopened.
Motorists may also experience significant delays after a three-car crash in Papakura.
Police were called to the incident at 7.10am this morning, down from the intersection of Popes and Porchester Roads.
Three people have suffered moderate to minor injuries and have been taken to Middlemore Hospital.
A Police spokesperson said the crash may cause "traffic chaos".
"We are working to put a diversion in place but motorists are warned that it will take some time to clear the road and to expect delays."
A motorist called the Herald to report a five-car pile up on SH1 near the Nelson St offramp.
There was also a report that a multi-car crash at Symonds St was blocking the left-hand lane.
New Zealand Transport Agency updates show that traffic is heavy all over the city as morning commuters drive to work.
Traffic is crawling on the Southern Motorway between Drury and Takanini and heavy between Mt Wellington and Greenlane
Traffic was also heavy on the Northern Motorway between Oteha Valley Rd and Esmonde Rd. A breakdown has been cleared on the Harbour Bridge creating delays back to Fanshawe St.
The Northwestern Motorway is heavy between Lincoln Rd and Bond St and also from Te Atatu Rd and Royal Rd.
The Southwestern Motorway between Dominion Rd and Queenstown Rd and between Lambie Dr and Massey Rd.
