Town square cordoned off after alleged sexual assault

Palmerston North Police are questioning a 17-year-old male after a 14-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted in the city's Square early this morning.

The girl reported the incident to police shortly after the 3am attack near the information centre, Sergeant Brett Amas said.

The Square was cordoned off while police conducted a scene examination.

Police were also speaking to friends of the youth, from Dannevirke, but were not seeking any one else in relation to the alleged assault, Mr Amas said in a statement.
