Tourists visiting New Zealand spent nearly $6 billion in the year to September, and most plan to return, a survey shows.
Tourism Minister Mark Burton said the International Visitors Survey showed tourist spending was up 14 per cent on last year and 95 per cent since 1997.
"Tourism is big business in New Zealand, and it has an even bigger future," he said in a statement.
"Events like the America's Cup, The Lord of the Rings and the Discovery Channel's soon to be released Royal Tour are all showcasing New Zealand's spectacular landscape and breathtaking adventure to an international audience."
As well, New Zealand had been working hard to promote itself as the Pacific's most unique and sophisticated destination, Mr Burton said.
"By marketing our culture and arts, as well as our stunning natural environment, we will become known worldwide as a sophisticated, world-class, year-round destination."
