Two tourists who were assaulted by a group of people earlier today remain in hospital tonight.
It is believed the attack, which involved two male tourists and a group of eight people, took place outside the Vagabond Backpacker in Christchurch about 2.30am this morning.
This afternoon a manager at the Vagabond Backpackers said he was unable to make any comment.
After the attack the pair were admitted to hospital, one with a broken jaw, and the other with serious eye injuries, police said.
A Canterbury District Health Board spokesman said both men were in a stable condition, however neither was in a state to talk.
He said one of the two men spoke very little English.
Police have asked anyone with any information, or any witnesses, to contact Detective Marc Boodee on 03 363 7400.
