A French woman is in a critical condition after a crash in Waikato yesterday in which six people were injured.
The crash occurred on State Highway 3 just north of Awakino in south Waikato around 6pm.
New Plymouth Police Detective Sergeant Gerard Bouterey said a vehicle heading south and carrying a family of four and a northbound vehicle carrying a French couple collided.
The French couple were airlifted to Waikato Hospital where the woman was in a critical condition and the man in a serious condition.
The family - two women and two children - were taken to Taranaki Base Hospital where the women remained in a stable condition.
The children suffered minor injuries, Mr Bouterey said.
The crash was being investigated and it was unclear at this stage what factors led to the crash.
"However, we are continuing to make inquiries and appeal for anyone that witnessed the crash, or who was in the area between 5.30pm to 5.45pm and saw either vehicles to contact police," Mr Bouterey said.
