Tourist discovers famous signpost in Bluff is wrong

A Scottish tourist has called a bluff, after pointing out the famous signpost in Bluff is all wrong.

Work to change the famous signpost is now underway.

The tourist also noticed the signs for Cape Reinga and Wellington were pointing in different directions.

The Invercargill City Council has brought in an expert, and they discovered that not only were the directions wrong - but the distances as well.

"I've had a few comments from tourists who've worked it out and I've passed their comments on to the relevant authorities, but nothing seems to get done," he told Newstalk ZB radio.

Mayor Tim Shadbolt assured the post will be changed - by whom, he doesn't know.

"Well it'll be the ministry of signposts I suppose, I don't know, we'll have to go through the correct authorities."

Shadbolt told Mike Hosking it's the town's biggest tourist attraction.

"I think it's something like 87,000 people go to that signpost every year.

But he said he doesn't think people take its directions too seriously.
