Police have named the woman killed in a car crash near Te Anau last night as Uruguayan tourist Eiraldi Hernandez.
Sergeant Tod Hollebon, of Te Anau police, said the 23-year-old was thrown from her car on the Te Anau-Manapouri highway, about 10pm.
"Members of the public came across the crash where a Daihatsu Charade vehicle had crossed the centre line, hit a bank and rolled," Mr Hollebon said.
"The female driver, who was the sole occupant in the vehicle, had been ejected and was found on the roadside nearby.
"Efforts were made to resuscitate the woman by those in attendance and by trained medical staff; however it is believed she was killed instantly."
Ms Hernandez was travelling around New Zealand on a working holiday.
