Thunderstorms cut power to Christchurch's eastern suburbs

More than 3000 Christchurch residents woke to a morning without power.

Lightning and thunderstorms rolling across the city have cut electricity to eastern suburbs such as New Brighton and Sumner.

Although power is slowly being restored, Orion Energy says it isn't expecting to get it completely turned back on until 9am.
